Skyspace Rice the pyramidal structure built in 2012 accommodates 120 people between two levels. The main feature of this park is the Twilight Epiphany, which is acoustically engineered to those musical performances and to act as a laboratory for music school students on select days after sunset. The constructed of grass, concrete, stone and composite steel, the structure is equipped with an LED light sequence that projects onto the ceiling and through an aperture in the pristine made roof just before sunrise and at sunset.
In both shows, Turrell’s light sequence is projected onto the pavilion’s ceiling. As the natural sunlight rises or ebbs, the color patterns work with it, lending unexpected hues and colors to the natural sky. The show is silent, with no music and no narration. As the 40-minute presentation proceeds, many viewers take to laying on the benches, transfixed by the patterns moving above. This is not a laser light show, but rather a slow experience that engages your own eyes and mind. Don’t be surprised if the large square window on the ceiling appears to pulse or move towards you while you are watching the performance.
There is no admission fee. This park is open Wednesdays through Monday, one hour before sunrise until 10pm; Tuesdays, one hour before sunrise until 4pm. Show begin 20 minutes before sunset. The park is located at the Suzanne Deal Booth Centennial Pavilion, Rice University, and Houston, TX 77005 just down the street from the Houston Zoo.
